Horror movie list, for those of us who watch year round

I always get excited for October, that time of year where everyone seems to be watching horror films. I watch them all year round, but I love the buzz and the excitement of everyone talking about them. Sharing their favorite films or moments. Or totally roasting them. Because talking crap is part of the essential horror movie experience, whether you’re watching a dud or the movie went in a totally campy direction.

I know I’m not the only one who is on a constant search for new horror films, so I thought I’d share some I’ve enjoyed over the past year or so. (I won’t be listing them in any particular order).

  1. Little Joe (2019) - If you ever thought that scientists were going too far by genetically altering plants, and one day that may come to haunt us, watch this.

    On: Hulu

  2. The Wind (2018) - Imagine going back to the early colonization of America. Moving out west, creating a homestead, with nobody else around but your husband. But he sometimes has to leave you for days at a time, to fetch supplies from the nearest town. What’s really going on? Supernatural prairie horror film worth your time.

    On: Netflix

  3. Seven In Heaven (2018) - Just another teen movie? Hell no. Buncha teens get together for what looks like your stereotypical rager, which got much bigger than intended. It all plots along as usual until a group of them go upstairs to play Seven in Heaven in the empty house. Two nervous teens go in, and they do not come out. Where tf did they go? And is it any better than that party, they clearly didn’t want to be at?
On: Pay to view (couldn’t find it streaming anywhere currently on any services you might subscribe to already)

  4. The Devil Below (2021) - A group of adventurers are paid to travel to an abandoned mine, in the far-off hills of Appalachia. They go to figure out why the coal mine caught fire, and collect samples. They go, despite being the location being kept from them, by the locals. This group of folks get more than they bargained for. Shoulda listened to the locals. Urban legends aren’t always tall tales
    On: Netflix

  5. Drag Me to Hell (2009)- A young banker is approached for a payment extension by an old Romanian woman. Will she help the old woman? Or side with her bosses, to attempt to get the promotion up for grabs. This is a hilariously kitschy film, where I was definitely laughing at the protagonists’ expense. Wouldn’t watch this if you’re squeamish about spit though

On: Peacock (i’ve never heard of it, so I can’t personally recommend this. BUT google said it’s streaming for free here. Trying to keep most of my picks accessible, if I can)

BONUS film: I’m putting a thriller here because if you haven’t seen it, you definitely should before it leaves Netflix on December 31st.

  • The Game (1997) - What do you get a rich man for a gift, when he has everything? The protagonist’s brother buys him a voucher for “The Game”. So mysterious, that nobody will tell him what the Game is. Not even his brother, who claims he was absolutely thrilled by it himself when he played. The only thing he knows, is that it will be personalized to him and his life. He winds up devolving into a paranoid hysterical state on the run, not sure who to trust.

On: Netflix | Tubi (haven’t used this either, but it’s marked as free here)
